Lifting Employees’ Spirits at Work: How to Choose Appropriate Music

By Heather Tourville
People love music. It makes them feel happy, motivated, and ready to take on the world. As a part of your employee wellness program , you can play music in your office to help increase productivity, decrease boredom, and encourage good relationships between co-workers. Before you put any old song on though, it is important to know how to choose the best music for the office.

1)      When trying to boost creativity, self-esteem, or motivation, choose music that is bass heavy. This is the most motivating type of music -- the type that makes you drive faster in the car or move your feet to the beat.
2)      For the times that call for full concentration, choose a steady but rhythmic beat. In most cases, instrumental music is best because there are no lyrics to interrupt your employees’ train of thought.
3)      Play uplifting music in the lobby or break room, even if you play music that is a little tamer throughout the office. When your employees take a break or walk through the lobby to get to another part of the office, they will reap the benefits of the uplifting music, returning to their desk in a better mood.
Music is not for everyone, though. If you find that some employees are bothered by music, you can create a policy that employees who choose to listen to music wear headphones. If you are just starting out playing music in the workplace, start with something low key and see how your employees respond. The holidays are the perfect time to test this out. Once you know that the effects are positive, you can gradually change the music to include songs that are more upbeat and motivational. In the end, it will take time to find the perfect music, but the effort will be well worth the results if it means better spirits and higher levels of productivity.
