You’ve likely heard of the term interoperability. It’s a current buzzword in health care, and an extremely important initiative that supports the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) initiative toward value-based care and putting patients first.
But what does it actually mean, and how do health and wellness professionals play a part in this initiative?
CMS Administrator Seema Verma hopes to see a day where we have the same expectations for our health care as we do for our financial institutions, online travel agencies, and shopping apps. She envisions a future where patients are empowered to access their healthcare data anywhere, control how it will be used, and be confident it is safe and secure.
That is the goal of interoperability: freely shared, accessible, secure information.
In part 2 of our 4-part series, we explore why interoperability is a key theme within the value-based care movement, and how population health professionals can prepare for the inevitable changes to stay compliant and secure.
