How happy is your population? It’s a critical marker that has an impact on productivity, presenteeism and absenteeism, employee turnover, and morale.
It’s almost like our founding fathers understood the value of wellness when they penned the words:
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
This statement dates all the way back to 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. History shows that humans have been searching for that oh-so-hard to define emotion for hundreds of years: happiness.
But what is happiness? People have been searching for the true meaning of this for centuries. The Dalai Lama wrote an entire book on it. Modern-day authors have written bestselling books from The Power of Positive Thinking (1952) to Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment (2007).
Purpose and Positivity in Mental Health
The positivity movement has taken a front seat in the journey toward wellness – and for good reason. Studies show that a simple shift in mindset can make the difference between being healthy and unhealthy. Many psychologists now believe that when individuals have a defined purpose in life, it can reduce stress and even decrease episodes of depression. Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 300 million people of all ages across the globe. With depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, the focus on improving mental health has sparked many changes in the health care system.
The World Health Organization perhaps puts it best:
Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
