How Proper Sitting Posture Improves Workplace Health

By Wellsource

workplace health

At many modern workplaces, the majority of an employee's day is spent sitting at a desk while working on a computer. If you spend 6 to 8 hours a day in a sitting position, there are several important health tips.

Why is sitting posture so important? Not sitting at a desk correctly can cause numerous health problems, both short term and long term. Poor posture can cause back pain, shoulder pain, strained eyes, carpal tunnel syndrome, and even blood clots in the legs.

When sitting at your desk, always remember to:

  • Sit with your back straight.
  • Raise your chair so that your computer keyboard is the same height as your elbows.
  • Work with the keyboard close to you, and with the keys centered with your torso.
  • Position the monitor so that when you are looking at it, your neck stays in a straight, "neutral" position, not bent up or down.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor in front of you, and your legs uncrossed.
  • Use the wrist rests on your keyboard, and adjust the keyboard's tilt so that your wrists rest comfortably.
  • Take breaks every few hours so that you can stand, walk around, and stretch your neck, wrists, fingers, and back to keep them from cramping or becoming strained.
