Brain Food: Snacks to Store in Your Desk

Staying alert all day can be a challenge when your employees are feeling fatigued or stressed out, especially during the busy season. Rather than risk your employees taking cat naps right at their desks, you can suggest various brain foods that are known to naturally put a little more pep in their step. Make your suggestions a regular part of your employee wellness program newsletter and, before you know it, your employees’ productivity levels will increase with this simple change.  

Types of Brain Food  


Below are some simple brain foods that your employees can keep on hand that require no preparation, yet provide plenty of health benefits:  


·        Blueberries – The nutrients in blueberries are known to naturally make a person better able to concentrate and will even improve their memory. Fresh blueberries are better than dried, because of the higher sugar content in the dried fruit. But both, in limited quantities, can really help.


·        Pumpkin seeds – A small handful of pumpkin seeds provides the body with high levels of zinc, which also helps to enhance a person’s ability to focus.


·        Walnuts – The antioxidants and Omega-3s in these nuts make them a powerful brain booster, even helping to improve reasoning skills.


·        Dark chocolate – The nutrients in dark chocolate are not just good for the heart, but the brain, too. It helps to perk your employees up, making them able to be more productive. Just make sure that the type that your employees are consuming is at least 70 percent cocoa, in order to get all of the benefits of dark chocolate.


·         Green tea – The antioxidants found in green tea can help to keep the mind alert and fight off sluggishness, without the same caffeine crash that coffee would cause.
